: . Prologue . :
"Don't you dare start anything here, Lucia Elizabeth Malloy."
She rolled her eyes and sent the young man walking beside her a baleful look. "I never start anything, dearest brother mine."
"Bull! What about that fist fight two schools ago, at Palmetto, that ended up with the fire department showing up?"
"Not my fault," she stated as they started up the steps to their newest school. "The guy called me a dyke."
"That wasn't why you hit him."
"Yes, it was. I kicked him in the nuts because he called you a faggot, though."
This time Luke rolled his eyes at her. "And God forbid anyone insult me. Which one of us is older again?"
"Hey, don't blame it on me because you were in more of a rush to get out."
"Then what about Copeland? The guy there didn't even get a chance to talk."
He pushed the door open as she answered, "He looked at us funny. I didn't like it."
"Hence is why he now has to eat from a tub for three more weeks?"
"Absolutely."
"I mean it, Luce. Please, don't get us kicked out of here. Who knows what Aunt Rose will do? This is the last public school in the area, after all."
She let out a loud sigh. "Fine. I'll do my absolute best to avoid getting us kicked out." Out of habit, she was already scouting the nurse's office, the guidance counselor, and the principal, though. Promise or no promise, she'd probably be on first name basis with all of them within the month. She stopped outside the counselor's door. "This is where we need to go first."
He nodded and rapped sharply on the door, the noise echoing in the empty hallways. The door before him stayed closed, but behind her, another door opened, the one she'd figured was the school nurse. A girl backed out, long white hair trailing her back, nearly to the hem of the knee length dress she wore. Lucia's breath caught in her throat as the girl turned and she noticed downcast red eyes. Words completely left her for the first time she could recall.
She had taken a half step towards the other girl when the councilor's door open. She turned to see a greying matronly lady with green eyes smiling down at them. She glanced back to where the other had stood - but she was gone.
